  • 1 cup flour (whole wheat, spelt, oat, barley, etc.)
  • 3/4 cups rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup mashed sweet potato (baby food sweet potatoes works well)
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 apple, peeled and diced small
  • Non-fat plain Greek yogurt for frosting
  • Small treats for garnish (crumbled biscuits/cookies, fresh or dried fruit)
Directions:
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Mix dry ingredients together in one bowl.
  • In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients together. Combine wet and dry ingredients until well-blended.
  • Then, scoop the batter into paper lined muffin tins (6-8). Fill to the top as this dough is very dense and will not rise.
  • Bake standard sized muffins for 25-30 minutes, mini muffins for approximately 15 minutes (or until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean).
  • Cool on a rack.
  • Frost and serve, or freeze the muffins without the frosting.
  • Refrigerate muffins that are not eaten.

Sweet Potato Chews For Dogs

Here's a simple dog treat recipe: Sweet Potato Chews.
It is so simple there is only one ingredient!

Sweet potato chews

This homemade dog treats recipe is courtesy of Joy Clemens of Hiwatari
Kennel and yields healthy and natural dog treats.

What you need:
  • Sweet potato, any size
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Directions:
  • Cut a flat side off the sweet potato.
  • Then, make 3-4 lengthwise cuts form this.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
  • Turn the pieces over.
  • Bake another 10-15 minutes.
  • Let cool. The longer they cool, the harder and chewier they become.
No need to worry about over-baking. The chews will darken, but will hold their color unless they burn. But even then, dogs will still enjoy them with burnt edges.

Sweet potato dog treats provide vitamins A and C for your dog, which are necessary for healthy eyes, skin and gums.

Click the link for a dog cake recipe for sweet potato cake, using cinnamon and a very minimal amount of  marshmallows, just for a different taste. All of the ingredients are human grade, so if you find your own mouth watering, and it probably will because the aroma is wonderful, you can feel free to share with your pooch, if he lets you.

    Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Q: Are peanut butter dog treats healthy for dogs?
A: Yes, if you make them with the "right kind" of peanut butter.

If you are going to make healthy dog treats, then you will need to use healthy ingredients for dogs. Not all human foods are appropriate. The grocery store peanut butter brands that make wonderful peanut butter and jelly sandwiches contain sugar and also have a high fat content, high sodium content, and preservatives.

These peanut butter dog treats are courtesy of Bitsie Boutique For Pets & Tots in Madison, Ohio:

    Fido's Frosting dog treat icing
Fido's Frosting brand Royal Icing for Dogs was used to decorate the treats. It dries hard and shiny and does not need to be refrigerated. It will not melt. Look how perfect the little baseball threads came out. These treats will be gobbled up for sure!

All natural peanut butter will not have added sugar, salt, hydrogenated oil or preservatives. Or you could use peanut powder which is gluten free and lower in fat because peanut oil is removed in the processing. This might be something to think about if you have an overweight dog.

    Gluten Free Dog Treats

Does your dog need to eat gluten free dog treats?

First of all, what exactly is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye.

Humans who suffer from an intestinal illness called celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten which causes inflammation in the small intestines of these sufferers.

Irish Setters are one dog breed prone to celiac disease.

Some dogs are grain sensitive. Dogs were originally carnivores, but due to the economics of making dog food, grains were introduced to keep the costs down and many low cost dog food is primarily made from grains.

Grain allergies are common in dogs. If your dog is scratching a lot, have him evaluated first by your vet before you diagnose him yourself! There are many reasons why a dog could be scratching.

If your dog does require a gluten free diet and has grain allergies, instead of trying to figure out what is and is not healthy for him, you can use this dog cake mix from K9Cakery.com:

Eggs, fresh fish, meat and chicken, cheese, fruits and vegetables are all gluten-free.

Gluten-free flours include rice flour, potato flour, corn flour, soy flour, and a myriad of flours from lesser-known grains.
