Pumpkin Dog Treats

Pumpkin dog treats suggest "fall" and conjure up images of the leaves on the trees turning colors and nights getting cooler....even if you live in a tropical climate. Pumpkins are ubiquitous for Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations.

These gorgeous decorated dog treats are pumpkin spice cupcakes made by My Doggy Delights bakery in Hollywood, Florida.

If you are going to make homemade pumpkin dog treats, and you plan to use canned pumpkin due to the ease it provides, just make sure you use pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling which has a high sugar content to make it palatable for human taste buds (and the reason why pumpkin pie is so delicious!) The pie filling also contains a lot of calories. Your dog doesn't care about eating a sweet taste like we do, so spare him the calories.

These beautiful dog treats are pumpkin carob drops made by the Pup-Cake Barkery in Rogers, Arkansas:

Your kitchen will really smell wonderful while these treats are baking! Have a cup of pumpkin spice coffee while you wait.

Pumpkin is a high source of fiber and can aid dogs who suffer from constipation, either due to their diet or other reasons. The flesh of the vegetable is all you need. Pumpkin rind is not suggested for dogs because it is hard to digest and gas-producing. Pumpkin seeds are not recommended for your pet either due to creating a possible choking hazard.

Show Off Your Dog Business With A Large Dog Cake

Looking for a unique way to show off your dog business? Hold a grand opening, an open house, or celebrate your dog business' anniversary or birthday and serve a beautifully decorated large dog cake like this one from the Coastal K-9 Bakery in Wilmington, NC.

This cake was decorated with Fido's Frosting dog treat icing. "Fido's Frosting is great to work with. I LOVE it. See how pretty it looks. "

A large dog cake is the perfect compliment for a grand opening of a dog business where dogs are invited, for a graduation party from obedience class (where of course everyone will be sitting and waiting to eat their cake when told to), or for a birthday party with a lot of doggie guests.

This silicone cake pan makes baking easy and grease free. All the greasing that is necessary for a metal pan is not needed, which not only cuts down on effort, but can save some calories as well.

Dog lovers even make ice sculptures in the shape of a bone to decorate their grand opening celebrations, which is a novel idea. Make a cake for the human guests as well. It will be "different", and your event will be talked about.

As Marie Antoinette almost said, "Let them eat dog cake."

Preservatives for Dog Treats

Q: I'm looking for ways to naturally preserve my dog treats. Is citric acid a good preservative? What about dried egg?

A: Bakers use various compounds as preservatives. Technically, there are no true natural preservatives. The definition of preservative implies that it is a chemical. The following substances are actually antioxidants but are used because they act like preservatives and prevent the spoilage of fat so baked goods have a longer shelf life.

Citric Acid

Commonly referred to as "lemon salt" or "sour salt". It is found in fruits and berries and used as a preservative or flavor enhancer. Bakers use it in place of lemon juice because it has a tart taste. It is also commonly put on fresh cut fruit to keep it from browning.

Ascorbic Acid and Vitamin C

Ascorbic acid is a synthetic form of Vitamin C, which is a naturally occurring anti-oxidant found in fruits and vegetables and helps to prevent the growth of mold in a homemade dog treat recipe. The structural integrity of VItamin C is detroyed by heat. Therefore, if you plan to bake the dough (which you most likely are going to do), the chemical bonds of the compound will come undone and it will be useless. This is why bakers use ascorbic acid. Amount to use: 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon per 1 cup of dry ingredients.

Powdered ascorbic acid

Rosemary oil acts as a natural antioxidant. However, it does have its own aroma  and this aroma will permeate the dough, so keep that in mind when using it.
Use 1 3/4 teaspoon to 5 pounds of butter or oil.

Dried Egg

Dried egg is processed with potassium sorbate.  Potassium sorbate is used as a food preservative to extend shelf life by preventing the growth of mold, yeast and bacteria. It is naturally occurring in many plants and is the most widely used food preservative and commonly referred to as a "mold inhibitor". Use 2 teaspoons liquid potassium sobate to 5 pounds dog treat mix.

Vitamin E

Also referred to as "Mixed Tocopherols." Vitamin E works as an antioxidant which keeps fats from spoiling. It is used to enhance the shelf life of baked goods. Either Vitamin E oil or Vitamin E powder is good. 1/4 teaspoon per batch of treats is recommended by a baker of dog treats who says that it can be found in a natural health store. It is especially useful if you are using a recipe that contains oil.

Difference between dog treat icing and dog treat frosting

Q: Is there a difference between dog treat icing and dog treat frosting?
A: Actually, there is.

As one dog lover explained: "Frosting is the fluffy stuff on a cupcake and icing is the sweet, hard stuff on a cookie."

K9Cakery has a slightly different twist to this specifically for dogs. Fido's Frosting is used to frost a dog cake and Fido's Frosting brand Royal Icing for Dogs is used  to dip, glaze, drizzle and decorate dog treats and dog biscuits. All Fido's Frosting brand icings dry hard and do not need refrigeration. The dog treat icing dries shiny and makes an interesting finish.

The Frosting Guy shows the difference between dog treat icing
and dog treat frosting in this Youtube video

Many bakers choose to make their own icings and frostings. But those who have tried the Fido's Frostings enjoy the ease which it offers. Just add water and stir.

They are sugar free and only made with human grade ingredients. People will not necessary like the taste because there is no sugar, and humans love sugary desserts! But there are some who do not mind. When dogs smell it, they can't wait to try it.

K9Cakery will look for a vendor in your geographical location who carries it if you so desire because sometimes the shipping charges can be high, both in the US and  internationally. As more and more dog bakeries try Fido's Frosting, they appreciate its merits and distribution is growing.

These dog treat icings come in various flavors and there is a cream cheese frosting for dogs as well.

Just remember that life is short, especially for our pets. Let them eat more dog treat frosting.

Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Q: Are peanut butter dog treats healthy for dogs?
A: Yes, if you make them with the "right kind" of peanut butter.

If you are going to make healthy dog treats, then you will need to use healthy ingredients for dogs. Not all human foods are appropriate. The grocery store peanut butter brands that make wonderful peanut butter and jelly sandwiches contain sugar and also have a high fat content, high sodium content, and preservatives.

These peanut butter dog treats are courtesy of Bitsie Boutique For Pets & Tots in Madison, Ohio:

Fido's Frosting brand Royal Icing for Dogs was used to decorate the treats. It dries hard and shiny and does not need to be refrigerated. It will not melt. Look how perfect the little baseball threads came out. These treats will be gobbled up for sure!

All natural peanut butter will not have added sugar, salt, hydrogenated oil or preservatives. Or you could use peanut powder which is gluten free and lower in fat because peanut oil is removed in the processing. This might be something to think about if you have an overweight dog.

Halloween Dog Cookies

Halloween dog cookies make spook-tacular fare for the four-legged costumed ghouls and princesses. You can find decorated dog treats at your favorite dog bakery, or make your own.

Halloween is a family event especially when young trick-or-treaters are involved. Frequently, the dog gets to accompany the procession. And if everyone is dressing up, you can be sure the dog will not be left out.

These Halloween dog treats were made by Bone Appetit, a pet bakery in Sandwich, Illinois:

Color writers and Fido's Frosting brand of Royal Icing For Dogs were used to decorate the little ghosts, cats, pumpkins and bats. Fido's Frosting dries hard, smooth and shiny, and will not melt! These treats are irresistible.

You can make your own Halloween treats with Halloween-themed cookie cutters. Or simply make bone shaped dog biscuits and just use colored decorations to turn them into holiday treats.

No matter how much effort you want to put into treat making, the dogs and their owners will be appreciative of the thought.

If you have some treats to show off, please post images for the
K9Cakery Facebook community to enjoy.

Yogurt Icing For Dogs Dries Hard And Does Not Melt

The best dog treat icing is the award-winning Fido's Frosting brand. The dog icing is made with all natural yogurt and all human grade ingredients. It is sugar free and made in the USA.

And the best feature? It dries hard and will not melt, even in hot environments like Arizona deserts! You can put a hot flame over it and it will not even begin to droop, which makes it a perfect yogurt frosting if you plan to ship dog cakes or decorated dog treats to friends or customers.

Take a look at this beautiful homemade dog birthday cake made by a pet parent named Kendall:

It was Mozart's first birthday and Kendall decorated his cake with Fido's Frosting. It is very easy to use. Just add the specified amount of water and stir. You can pipe decorations just like you see in the photo with this yogurt frosting.

See how it dries with a smooth finish? You do not have to be a professional baker to produce a gorgeous cake! Fido's Frosting was created specifically to make the dog cake decorating process quick and easy.

Finally, this dog cake frosting does not require refrigeration, unlike frosting made by melting yogurt chips.

Halloween Dog Treats

Halloween dog treats are the perfect surprise when furry trick-or-treaters come knocking this month.

These little paws and bones are very easy to make and will delight both dogs and humans!

Get the paw shape and mini bone silicone molds through K9Cakery.com. The molds do not require greasing. Mix up K9 Katie's peanut butter biscuit mix, and pour into the molds. Bake for 15 - 18 minutes at 350 degrees. Let the biscuits sit in the oven for 30 to 60 minutes to harden. Pop them out of their mold and let them cool.

To decorate, mix Fido's Frosting brand Royal Icing for Dogs. This sugar free yogurt dog treat icing dries hard and will not melt. It does not require refrigeration which makes it perfect as a treat to go. As you can see in the photo, it dries very shiny!

Orange, black, white and purple would be the Halloween colors to use. You can put a few treats into a plastic bag and tie it up with a Halloween themed ribbon for the perfect dog treat packaging.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
